When Kevin and I got married in May 2008, we thought married life would shift us down a few notches in the “Excitement Department”. Dating, moving in together, getting engaged and surviving two weddings, all within two years was a lot to come off of and we were both ready to relax for once.
To date, that has yet to happen.
Kevin and I started “nesting” right away. Maybe we were still on an adrenaline rush from planning the wedding and needed something new to keep things exciting. Whatever the reason, it was the catalyst for pure insanity to come. We adopted Simba, our little corgi/german shepard/golden retriever pup, and bought our first home that summer. And because this is L.A., the house was a “work in progress”.
By fall of 2009, we had gutted and rebuilt an entire bathroom, installed central air, hardwood floors throughout, turned our den into a master suite, enclosed our back sunroom, rearranged the direction of our front door and replanted our front flower bed (twice, to the dismay of Kevin, the designated dirt digger). Although our little house is still one of the ugliest on the block and there was still plenty to do, Kevin and I decided to temporarily discontinue the madness and enjoy a peaceful life as newlyweds. “Temporarily” being the key word of choice.
A mentor once told me, “If you want to make God laugh, just tell him your 5-year plan.” Well I’m not religious, but that saying sure rings true! 2009 finished off on a disappointing and unexpected note; I got laid off from my company… but 2010 kicked off with a happy surprise; we’re expecting!!! Yes, a baby. Juxtaposing those news together and what do you get?
Return of chaos!!! Just how we like it.
Kevin and I went through many moments of frantic self-doubt about whether we’re mentally ready to take on a child. Some may debate (mostly our parents) whether we’re even taking good care of ourselves. Well we’re leaving our 20s behind this year, about to enter parenthood, adulthood and possibly a slew of other “hoods” that have been avoidable up until this point. It’s now time to grow up 🙂 (a little)…
Our little bundle of joy is expected to make his or her grand arrival in September. This blog was created to document and share our trials and triumphs as Kevin and I roll up our sleeves in an attempt to create our little family nest and become respectable parents 🙂
This is sooooooooooo awesome!!
Totally agree w/ Robin – AWESOME!!!
